Sunglasses To Aid Bikers

Here’s a look at some images for the Nike Hindsight which is a concept project for sunglasses that improve peripheral vision. They are designed specifically for bikers to help them recognize motion on the extreme edges of normal vision.

The lens technology that allows this to happen is apparently not new and has been around for a century or so. The glasses utilize Fresnel lenses to add an extra 25 degrees of viewing space on each side. The added viewing space gets distorted from the lenses, but is great for detecting motion, which is what you wnat as a biker crossing a bust street.
I think this is pretty novel use of existing technology to solve a current problem. I wonder if you could use the same concept for the sun shields on football helmets. That extra 25 degrees could give a quaterback that extra edge when a linebacker is coming in for a previously “blind side” hit.
